omega 3 fatty acids

Omega 3 fatty acids are a kind of polyunsaturated fats. These fatty acids are not produced in the body, but they are necessary for proper health. This is the reason that it is necessary to consume them in the food that we eat. These fatty acids are not stored and used for energy. Instead they play major roles in many of the functions of the body including health of the heart and brain function. If there is deficiency of omega 3 then the person will experience depression, lower intelligence level, arthritis, heart disease and cancer along with many other health problems. ALA ? alpha-linolenic acid This is the most common type of omega 3 fatty acid which is available in the diet. This fatty acid is available from plant foods and it has to be converted to EPA or DHA in order to be used by the body. However, in humans this process is inefficient and a very small portion of the ALA fatty acid is converted to DHA or EPA and most of it is stored in the body or used for energy like any other types of fats. Some of the studies conducted by experts prove that ALA rich diet prevents the risk of death due to heart disease. At the same time, there is also an increased risk of prostate cancer. This risk is not associated with EPA and DHA which in fact protect from prostate cancer. ALA is found in good amounts in plant foods lie spinach, kale, soybeans, purslane, walnuts and some seeds like chia, hemp and flax. Some oils like flaxseed and canola oil are also rich in ALA. EPA ? eicosapentaenoic acid EPA is used by the body to produce molecules called eicosanoids which are signaling molecules and perform many roles physiologically and reduce inflammation. A case of chronic inflammation even if it is low level, can cause many common ailments. According to many studies fish oil that is high in EPA and DHA can reduce depression symptoms. According to some evidence, EPA is better than DHA in this regard. A study was conducted with menopausal women and it indicated that if they took EPA there was a significant reduction in the occurrence of hot flashes. Seafood is rich in EPA and DHA, especially fatty fish and algae. This is the reason that the term marine Omega 3 is used for these fatty acids. The concentration of EPA is highest in salmon, herring, shrimp, eel, and sturgeon. Dairy and meat of grass fed animals also contains some EPA. DHA ? docosahexaenoic acid This is an important structural component of the skin and retina of the eyes. It is necessary for the development and functioning of brain in childhood and also in adults. If there is a deficiency of DHA in childhood then later on there can be a problem of learning disability, ADHD and hostility. In later life also deficiency of DHA can lead to impairment in brain function and Alzheimer?s disease. DHA is found in seafood including fatty fish and algae. All the three omega 3 fatty acids are necessary for the proper functioning of the brain and body and if you feel that your diet does not contain enough of it then you should take supplements which are easily available over the counter in the market.
